What is Findaway Voices?
Findaway Voices is a service that connects authors with audiobook narrators. When an author submits a book to Findaway, they will select narrators from their talent pool that they think would be a good match for the book based on the author's criteria.
You get to set your own PFH rate (flat rate per hour of finished audio) and if you're chosen to narrate a title, you'll get paid your PFH rate multiplied by the final completed length of the book.
This is a great opportunity for narrators for a couple of reasons. First, you don't have to waste time auditioning for titles that might not be a great fit for you. Findaway works to match you with titles that they believe would be a good fit for you. You also don't need to worry about haggling with authors on pricing. You set your rate in advance and the author will decide if it fits their budget or not before moving to the next step with you.
Another big upside is that Findaway doesn't have any location restrictions like ACX does. This company works with authors and narrators all over the world, so if you live outside ACX territory (US, UK, Canada, and Ireland) this could be a good opportunity for you to get matched with audiobook narration jobs.
The obvious downside here is that you don't have the ability to audition for every available book that's submitted to the site, like you do on ACX. It's up to Findaway to match you with a title which means that you pool of potential matches may not be a high as it would be on ACX.
However, I think this is a site that all narrators should consider. It's always good to have an additional source of potential work that you don't have to spend a lot of extra time monitoring and maintaining.
How to Get Started with Findaway Voices
All you need to do to sign up is go to https://findawayvoices.com/narrators/ and fill out a couple of forms.
You'll first be asked to create an account on their site. Make sure that you choose the "Narrator" option down at the bottom.
After you create your account you'll get a welcome email explaining that someone from the Findaway team will be in touch within the next couple of days to gather additional information. They'll want to know about any previous experience that you have as an audiobook narrator as well as any audiobooks that you've produced in the past. They'll also want to know about any special vocal characteristics that you have such as accents, dialects, and vocal age ranges.
If you're accepted into the Findaway pool of audiobook narrators, you can sit back and wait until you've received a potential match notification.
If you don't have any narration experience I'd highly recommend picking up a few projects on ACX first or volunteering for either Librivox or Learning Ally before applying to Findaway. You'll want to have some samples of prior work to show so that you can be matched appropriately.
Just Getting Started with Audiobooks?
If you are just getting started with audiobook narration, my 5-Day Audiobook Audition Challenge is a great place to jump in and get your feet wet.
The "Challenge" is a five day video training workshop that will walk you through the process of getting set up on ACX, recording audio sample, picking out winning titles, and recording your first couple of auditions.
Each day you'll get a new assignment that will move you one step closer to your goal of submitting your first audiobook audition like a pro! Each lesson is only a few minutes long so it's manageable even if you don't have much spare time.
